Educating Immigrants

A critical factor for analyzing the impact on immigrants on Indiana is education, both that of the newcomers and of their children. Sagamore has produced several studies of immigrants and education that have identified critical gaps between the performance of Latino and non-Latino students, and that advanced several recommendations for governmental and nongovernmental actions to close the gaps. Starting in 2008 Sagamore helped found a statewide Multiethnic Indiana committee, consisting of representatives from universities and nonprofits, state and local governments, businesses and ethnic associations. In 2008 Sagamore released a study of education and the children of immigrants to more than 300 leaders at the first Multiethnic Indiana Conference. Another conference is scheduled for 2010.
