One of Sagamore’s first studies, “Connecting Mexico to the Hoosier Heartland,” examined the full range of economic relations between Indiana and Mexico. “Connecting Mexico” showed for the first time how much Indiana’s economic well-being depends on thriving relations with a prosperous Mexico. In part because of this study, the Mexican ambassador to the US came to Indianapolis to deliver a major speech about new approaches to economic relations between the neighbors. The results of Sagamore’s Mexico study bolstered decisions by IUPUI to form a strategic partnership with the autonomous University of Hidalgo in Mexico. Sagamore’s study of Indiana-Mexican economic connections led to several further studies of the economic impact on Indiana of immigrants from Mexico and Latin America.
