Building a 21st Century Workforce

In recent years, Indiana has been in the process of transitioning from its historical position as an industrial economy where it competed actively in production, transportation, and agricultural industries.  The 21st century knowledge-based economy, however, requires new skills and advanced knowledge, particularly in areas of science and technology.  Sagamore has studied the current state of adult education in Indiana, the performance of those enrolled in the system, and how that ultimately impacts future workforce development within the state.  Likewise, through their studies of immigration to Indiana, Sagamore researchers have shown that the state’s economic future will likely depend upon the ability to attract highly educated immigrants.  These studies have helped to clarify what is at stake for the state’s economy and what policymakers may need to do in order to help Hoosier workers transition to the demands of the 21st century.

  • Justin Heet and John Clark, “Indiana Immigration and Workforce Patterns”– An analysis of issues related to working-age immigrants, including discussions of immigration as a solution to the demographic crunch caused by an aging population and the relationship of immigration to new jobs in the state.
