Project Detroit

Feature by Brent Glass

Once known as the Motor City and the The Arsenal of Democracy, Detroit is now in dire straits regarding education, business, and crime

Detroit has been declining over the past fifty years.  The city is far too large for the amount of people that currently inhabit it.  Once having a population close to 2 million people, Detroit currently has around 715,000 inhabitants (roughly a 60 percent decrease in population over 60 years).  Detroit’s decline has resulted in the unemployment of nearly a third of the population, a 62 percent graduation rate among high-school students, and seven out of ten homicides unsolved within city limits.

Nevertheless, Detroit is in a position to reinvent itself.  In order to seize the opportunity the city must commit to a long and difficult journey to reform education, secure business investments, and create a safe community for the people of the city. Despite the hardships that Detroiters are facing many still hold on hope that Detroit will once again be a beacon of prosperity.
