There has been incredible growth in the number of civil society (non-profit) organizations—more than 1 million today vs. 250,000 in 1980. These organizations control $1 trillion in assets and employ more than 20 million people. But many fall short in accountability and do not understand sound business practices.

To help these organizations reach their potential, Sagamore Institute and the Office Depot Foundation (ODF)—the charitable giving arm of Office Depot, Inc.—work together to empower and elevate corporate and civic leaders who are dedicated to supporting their communities. This has been a natural and compelling partnership, as both Sagamore and ODF believe that citizens are the frontrunners in solving America’s most stubborn problems. Often, corporate leaders and corporations play the role of community citizens or community development investors.

Indianapolis’ history showcases such corporate citizenship brilliantly, through twentieth-century leaders who used their wealth and position to build the local economy and create healthier communities.
