Center on Faith in Communities
According to a 2009 Census Bureau Report , 43.6 million people in America are in poverty. 20.7 percent of children are growing up in impoverished families. A study from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development states, “On a single night in January 2008, there were 644,414 sheltered and unsheltered homeless persons nationwide." Meanwhile, the National Center for Education Statistics reports that “the high school dropout rate for students living in low-income families is about 10 times greater than the rate of their peers from high-income families.”
Unquestionably a nation of great wealth and abundance, America is not without prevailing poverty and social justice issues. Sagamore’s Center on Faith in Communities seeks to address issues like the ones above by inspiring, educating and equipping faith-based organizations in their efforts to transform communities.
