Lt. Governor Skillman Goes to China

While visiting China on an agricultural trade mission this June, Indiana's Lt. Governor Becky Skillman delivered a report on behalf of Sagamore Institute to the Zhejiang Academy of Social Sciences (ZASS), a policy-research arm of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences located in Zhejiang Province (Indiana’s “sister state” in China). Since June 2006, Sagamore and ZASS have been working together to identify specific industries that would benefit from new trade between Indiana and Zhejiang.

Currently, nine Indiana cities—Muncie, Anderson, Bloomington, Franklin, Indianapolis, Valparaiso, Elkhart, Fishers, and Marion—are pursuing sister-city relationships with cities in Zhejiang Province.

"Some of the biggest obstacles to Chinese investment in Indiana are the language and distance barriers," Skillman said. "By putting more feet on the ground in China, we can help break down those barriers."
