Lin-Manuel Miranda famously read Ron Chernow’s biography on Alexander Hamilton and brought the epic story to life on a Broadway stage. Hamilton: The Musical also offers a bit of the remedy for our era where too many citizens are historically illiterate, only half of eligible voters show up at the polls, and those engaged in the process are dividing into tribes.
One of the Hamilton lyrical themes was built around the antagonist Aaron Burr’s desire to be “in the room where it happens.” This is exactly the sentiment that all citizens should hold…to be a part of making meaningful change.
The good news is that you don’t need to go back to the 1780s to find that room. Nor do you need to go into politics. America’s founding fathers placed citizens at the center of the American Experiment. We simply need to understand the duties of citizenship and make our own story.
